Human Presence: The Mission Link in Distance Education
Dr. Douglas E. Hersh, Santa Barbara City College

Distance education has been plagued by low student satisfaction, low class completion rates and low academic success. Santa Barbara City College may have found a way to address this potent cocktail of collegiate compromise. After lengthy discussion with all constituencies, the college chose to migrate from the Blackboard learning content management system (LCMS), adopt Moodle and customize it with Web 2.0 tools for interaction and engagement, allowing students and their instructors to communicate synchronously and asynchronously with tools for desktop collaboration, two-way audio/video, streaming media, and more. This new paradigm, known as the Human Presence Learning Environment, has significantly increased SBCC students' satisfaction with their online classes, their completion rates and their academic success. Learn more about how SBCC accomplished these goals in this presentation.
