This session will present two research-based international, intersegmental collaborations between universities and public schools (K-8) in California and Finland. In the first; teachers and students at two sites work together using both synchronous broadband web-based communication and a specially designed program for simultaneously constructing online knowledge maps, "A Day in My Life." This collaboration also involves interactive video conferencing that enables students in CA and Finland to jointly collect and share data in a STEM-related project around paper airplanes, "Wings at Work." Next, the presenters will share a new possibility for collaboration between schools in CA and Finland. The new project was initiated by a second group in Finland associated with the Cicero Learning Project and InnoSchool, the basis for the first project. This project, the Global School Project, provides a basis for future global collaboration that is both based on, and extends, the first research project. This program also involves innovative collaborations between schools and business sectors.
